I have been to Shady Oak Butterfly Farm many times in the past four years. The staff at the farm are extremely knowledgeable and go out of their way to share their wisdom with you. Edith has taken me under her wing countless times and spent many hours with me discussing butterflies and their potential issues (butterfly diseases, pests, naturally occurring death, etc.). I have gained a great deal of knowledge from her and appreciate the time she shares with me.

I have yet to find a better selection of butterfly host and nectar plants anywhere or of better quality. Yes, on occasion you will find aphids, spiders, etc. on the plants but these are naturally occurring pests that for the most part will not harm the caterpillars. The only way the plants would be 100% pest free is if they are sprayed with insecticide which in turn would also kill the caterpillars. Their greenhouse are beautifully kept and the staff is always making improvements to them.
I recently placed an order for 24 Spicebush Swallowtail caterpillars. My order arrived late and incomplete. Moreover, only 5 caterpillars survived shipping, likely due to inadequate food provided by the team for shipping. After requesting a refund or additional caterpillars, the Shady Oak Butterfly team refused even after I provided photographic evidence of the materials. Their customer service is woeful.

The butterfly/caterpillar housing is always immaculate and very well organized. Every spring I purchase my children's teachers a butterfly rearing kit for their classrooms and the teachers as well as the students enjoy the educational experience immensely. If there is ever any problems with the caterpillars Shady Oak has always gone out of their way to make the issue right. I have had only two replacement sets needed in the four years I have been purchasing butterflies there. I have come home with countless caterpillars from them and have always had great success raising them to beautiful butterflies and moths.
I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for high quality caterpillars and plants. In my opinion they can't be beat.
